Painting Bathroom Tile like a Pro
Bathroom Tile can be painted
If you're tired of the mundane look of your bathroom tiles but don't want to undertake a costly and extensive tiling project, you may be wondering if it's possible to paint them. The answer is affirmative!
It is possible to paint bathroom tile, which can be a great way to update things without having to do a big remodeling project. Adding unique colors or designs can also increase the value of the space.

Some Advise to Consider Before Painting Your Bathroom Tile

When it comes to painting bathroom tile, the same rules apply as with any other painting job. It's essential to be aware of what is and isn't suitable for painting, pick the best supplies for the task, adequately prepare the area, and carry out the painting properly in order to achieve a successful outcome. Things to take into consideration when deciding whether or not to paint your bathroom tile include:
  • Areas exposed to moisture, such as tub and shower tile, should be avoided when painting, as it can cause the paint to peel off.
  • Floors can be painted too, but frequent foot traffic may result in a need for more frequent repainting due to wear and tear on the paint.
  • To ensure proper adhesion of the paint on the tile and prevent any chipping or peeling, it is important to use a suitable primer and paint.

Pro Tips for Painting Bathroom Tile You will Love

Applying any ordinary paint on tiles may appear fine at first, but it won't stand the test of time and may result in a difficult cleanup. Taking advice from experts can help you save time and effort.
  • The surface of the tile to be painted must be thoroughly cleaned prior to painting.  Removal of any grease, dirt, and mold will need to be completed first.  If you are to identify any mold, it is important to reach out to a local mold mediation company to determine the correct process to have it taken care of immediately.
  • Using caulk and a putty knife, repair any of the tiles as needed.  You will want these repairs completed prior to any paint being applied.  Repair any damaged tiles, including cracks and chips, with a putty knife and caulk. Leaving them as is will only make damage more visible and apparent.
  • If you have touched up any tiles with the caulk, sand them to a nice smooth finish. You will also sand the existing glaze as well.  You will need a nice smooth, clean base for the primer to adhere to.
  • Prep the area around the tiles with tape to protect that area from getting primer, paint, or sealer on those other surfaces.
  • Use a bonding primer specifically designed for hard, glossy surfaces, and apply it with a roller. Don’t try to use Latex wall primer.  That will not work for tiles. You cannot cut corners on this because you need the right type of primer that will hold on to the tile surface so the paint can hold on to the primer. Let the primer completely dry.
  • You also need to use paint that is designed for use on tiles. Any other kind of paint substitute can lead to chipping, pealing, and blistering. You don’t want that to happen.  To begin, use a roller to cover over the bathroom tile with the paint.  For tight spots or small corners, use a smaller paint brush to cover - works great.  Allow 24 – 48 hours for the paint to fully dry.
  • A pro tip is to now apply a finishing sealer.  This will seal your freshly painted tiles.

If you are feeling creative and want to paint your tiles something different than one solid color, that can be done with some planning and templates.  You can use this to give compliment to your walls or flooring.  This can be tricky to do and you can always discuss your ideas with a professional painter.  They may have some helpful tips to provide.  Or offer to assist you with accomplishing your desired results.
